The Witch's Hat Water Tower that pierces the skyline along I-94 near the University of Minnesota is the symbol of Prospect Park, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Minneapolis and one of its best-kept secrets. Its hilly, winding streets, diverse architecture, progressive residents and proximity next to the University of Minnesota remind me of St. Anthony Park... not far away and next to the University's St. Paul campus. Both are very special, unique neighborhoods... but Prospect Park will also soon have the benefit of also having its own stop on the new Central Corridor Light Rail Transit line connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul. Originally a commuter suburb connected to the cities by street car line, the new LRT will also connect it to its roots.
Pratt School and Community Center is at the heart of the neighborhood next to Tower Hill Park on Malcolm, the main entrance to the neighborhood from University Avenue. The smallest and most historic school in the Minneapolis school district, Pratt Community School serves 185 students in Pre-K through 5th grade with an arts and science focus. Its small size means students form friendships with all ages.
Construction of the LRT transit line on University Avenue has blocked the Malcolm entrance to the community, but once completed it will make this an even more convenient location with easy access to both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul... now both about 10 minutes away by car. Neighborhood busniness, including award-winning Cupcake, combination bakery, coffee shop and deli, remain open during construction.
The Prospect Park neighborhood borders the East River Road neighborhood with its miles of walking and running trails along the Missippi River extending to both the University of Minnesota and St. Paul. They come together to form the joint Prospect Park East River Road neighborhood. A pedestrian bridge over I-94 connects the lower river road neighborhood with the upper hills of Prospect Park.
Platted in the 1880's and developed mainly at the beginning of the last century, the neighborhood boasts many stunning historic homes... and even includes The Willey House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright!
